According to the good ol’ Oxford Dictionary, art is defined as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” In today’s world math, reading, and science are dominant for the intellectual wellness of our children in school and us adults bust our bodies in the gym and suck down protein shakes in order to improve our physical wellness. How often do we work on our emotional wellness? Creating something is what you have been missing. I bet you are thinking to yourself, “I am not creative”, or maybe even “I know it is important for the kids, but it is a lot of work to plan art activities, get the supplies, make a mess, clean up the mess….” (I can’t be the only one thinking that, right?). This is where Colorful Creations steps in! For the last 4 years, Colorful Creations has been bringing smiles and beautiful works of art to the Aberdeen area. I grabbed my kids off of their electronics and went to go create something.
As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with fun everywhere. Carly Pochop, the owner of Colorful Creations did a wonderful job creating an atmosphere that inspires creativity.
My kids were not waiting around for me to take pictures, they dove right in and started picking out pieces to paint. My son was a little reluctant to come, but he had three pieces he wanted to paint picked out in the first minute we arrived. That is what’s so cool about this place. You walk in at any time they are open, grab something you like, pick out your paint, and start painting. Don’t worry about the mess because they got that covered. How wonderful is that!
My daughter, “This is the best day of my life”
Not only did they get to create pieces and have fun, they also had learned a bit too. Carly gave the kids a great lesson in chemistry and how the kiln works. Before Carly embarked on this journey, she was an elementary art teacher so teaching the kid’s came naturally. Inspiring kids in the area of art is what drives Carly. She is extremely knowledgeable in every aspect of art, which comes in really handy if you don’t know what you are doing….like me.
I couldn’t let the kids have all of the fun..I found this cute, little pitcher and a stencil that is totally my style (there are hundreds of stencils to choose from) and I just had to have it.
Carly’s goal when she started Colorful Creations was to have a place where anyone can come in whenever they are feeling the creative vibe and make something for themselves or someone they care for. Homemade gifts that come from the heart are more memorable, but Carly knows that it can be intimidating to walk in by yourself, especially if art isn’t something you are familiar with. That is why she offers many different classes where you can grab your friends and have an evening out while creating a work of art. She even sells local Dakota Territory Brewery beer and wine from Ghost Town Winery located in Watertown, SD and With the Wind Vineyard & Winery out of Rosholt, SD. There are even fresh cookies from CJ’s Patisserie available. Talk about a fun evening!
The classes aren’t just for the adults. All summer long there are art camps and special classes for the kiddos too. There was an art camp going on when I was in there and all of the kids were having a great time painting summery scenes on mugs.
If you don’t feel like making something, you can always buy something pre-made. Joanna Gaines eat your heart out.
Supporting local businesses is something Carly is really passionate about. Kat Ceramics, Wild Goat Designs, as well as art from the employees are some of the different local vendors that sell their amazing works in Colorful Creations. You need to get in there and check out it all out!
Whether you have seen something on Pinterest that you can’t get off of your mind or if you just have a little time to kill, come in to Colorful Creations. Carly and her talented team would love to help you out!
Pablo Picasso quoted, "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” So go on....give it a try!
