CJ Patisserie OwnerGrowing up in rural South Dakota my palette was far from sophisticated when it came to being exposed to different kinds of food. I considered it a treat when my mom would take us to the local bakery downtown for long johns on Saturday mornings. So, now being an adult, it was a nice surprise to step into the world of CJ’s Patisserie in Aberdeen, SD. I was expecting the normal indulgences; donuts, pies, and cookies, but what I saw and smelled was so much more. You can definitely sense that this little café should be in Paris, and not in South Dakota, but I sure am glad it’s here!

The displays are filled with delicacies that I had never heard of before, let alone tasted. Scones, macarons (not to be confused with macaroons), and a variety of other treats were before me. How can someone possibly decide? Peri Malsom, who opened up CJ’s Patisserie alongside her husband Alex 3 years ago, is quick to lend a hand with those tough decisions.

She recommends the almond croissants paired with a lavender honey latte. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention they serve coffee and espresso! Also among Peri’s favorites are the cheesecakes, homemade soups, and sandwiches. During my visit, tiramisu cheesecake was the feature. It was amazing! Definitely leave your diet at the door for this one.  Peri was quick to mention that if you are craving something that is not on the menu for that day, just let them know and they will provide you with what you need. They also accept special orders for everything including their wedding and birthday cakes. Peri loves a good challenge when it comes to baking and her cakes, so challenge her!

There is nothing that Peri & Alex Malsom enjoy more than baking, coffee, and giving back to the Aberdeen community. From being high school sweethearts, to attending The French Pastry School in Chicago, and to opening CJ’s Patisserie, the love for each other and food shows in everything they do. Stop in and pay them a visit, you will sure be glad you did!
